  9. This software consists of two programs, INSTALIT.EXE and INSTALL.EXE.  With
  10. these tools you can create your own customized install program for your
  11. applications.  INSTALIT will take you through several steps to create your
  12. personalized install program.  The first step is to setup the windows in a
  13. style that fits your needs.  There are three programmable windows and a
  14. background color that can be changed.  The first window is called a greeting
  15. window, the second is called the program window and the third is the copy
  16. window.  Each window can be modified with text and attributes as desired.
  17. The attributes of the border, window and text lines may all be changed in
  18. these three windows.

  20. There are two windows that cannot be changed. The first is the
  21. source/destination window where the user enters in the source drive, the
  22. destination drive and subdirectory.  The second window is the file copy
  23. window, which shows the user which file is being copied and displays errors
  24. if any occur.  Such errors would be an existing directory or no matching
  25. files on source disk.

  28.                THE WINDOW LAYOUT

  30. The greeting window is the first window that appears when INSTALL.EXE is
  31. executed.  You can put program information or warnings statements here.  At
  32. the bottom of the window it says press the escape key to abort the install or
  33. any key to continue.  This cannot be changed.  If the user chooses to
  34. continue, it will then take you to the next set of windows, otherwise it
  35. takes the user back to the dos prompt.

  37. The following screen has two windows, the top window is the program window
  38. where you can modify it as you like and the lower window is the source/
  39. destination window.  After the user enters in the information the
  40. source/destination window will close and the copy window will appear.  Note
  41. that the program window remains at the top of the screen.  In the middle of
  42. the copy window will appear the file copy window which starts on row 4 and
  43. extends to row 7.  You can place text on these lines in the copy window but
  44. they will be overlaid with the new window.

  46. If the installation is completed normally the user will get a text line on
  47. the last row reporting that the installation is complete.  If it has been
  48. aborted a message that the installation process has been aborted will appear. 
  49. If the installation is not aborted it will then create the batch file that
  50. you requested in the INSTALIT program with the executable program that you
  51. choose.  If no batch file was requested then none will be made.

  61.                 THE PROCESS

  63. When you select the menu option to modify a particular window the first
  64. screen you will see is the attribute form.  Here you will select the
  65. attributes for the border and the window.  You will also be asked for a
  66. window type.  There are four types of windows; 1-Normal, 2-Shadowed,
  67. 3-Exploding and 4-Borderless.  After you select the desired window type you
  68. will be taken to the text form where you will enter in the lines of text
  69. desired.  Note that all the lines do not need to have data in them nor do
  70. they need to be in order.  Each line consists of the text, the row it will
  71. appear on, the background attribute and the foreground attribute.  The
  72. greeting window allows for 8 lines, and both the program and the copy window
  73. allow for 6 lines of text.  After you enter in the text that you want you can
  74. press the escape key and that will take you out of the form and then show you
  75. what your window will look like on the screen.

  78.                  SELECTING FILES

  80. When the menu option FILENAMES is selected it will take you to a form where
  81. you will enter the files that you wish to be copied from your source disk. 
  82. The files will be copied in the order that you enter them in on the form. 
  83. There can be no blank entries between filenames such as:
  84.                               main.com____
  85.                               datafile.*__
  86.                               Program.exe_
  87.                               ____________
  88.                               mydata.dat__

  90. If this occurs the file mydata.dat and anything following that will not be
  91. copied over to the destination.  Up to 24 files can be selected for copying. 
  92. The way this routine was designed multiple disks can be used.  If a certain
  93. file cannot be found it prompts for the correct diskette or to abort.  The
  94. user will simply insert the next diskette and press any key and it will try
  95. again.  Wildcards may also be used.

  98.                    BACKGROUND

  100. This option will change the color of the background.  Since the windows can
  101. appear with a shadow you can select black as the background and the shadows
  102. will not show up, or select a normal type window.  The color selection can be
  103. from 0 to 7.

  106.             LOADING AND SAVING CONFIGURATIONS

  108. These options either save the current configuration to a file designated by
  109. the developer or loads a previously save configuration.  INSTALIT will
  110. automatically backup the configuration file that you are savinge with the
  111. extension of .BK!.  Note that the file used by INSTALL.EXE is INSTALL.CFG and
  112. the final configuration should be named such.

  121.                    BATCH FILE
  122.  
  123. This option will ask for the name of the batch file you wish to create in the
  124. root directory of the destination drive.  It also needs to know what the
  125. executable program is that will be called from the batch file.  When the
  126. installation is successful it will create the batch file with this
  127. information within it.  You can also insert the default directory that the
  128. software can be installed to.  The user may change this option during the
  129. install procedure.

  134. These programs were written in Turbo C 2.0 and the source code for both
  135. INSTALIT.EXE and INSTALL.EXE are available.  However, this code was written
  136. with THE WINDOW BOSS, another shareware product.  If you order the source
  137. code for INSTALIT and INSTALL you will receive only the code written by
  138. Lincoln Beach Software.  NO CODE from THE WINDOW BOSS will be included.  If
